Considering the expected abnormalities that may occur in the animal after delivery, it is important for the cowherd to make a significant change in the diet of the animal during the 120 days immediately preceding delivery and 60 days after delivery.
In order to maintain the daily feed intake of the animal during the prenatal period:
- Proper diet management is essential to create sufficient reserves of energy and other essential nutrients in the animal’s body.
To meet the urgent need for increased energy demand due to postpartum milk production while keeping the feeding period less than 60 days:
- It becomes very important to build energy reserves in the animal’s body before parturition through a balanced diet and nutrition planning.
The following changes are observed:
- During the prenatal period, the daily feed capacity of the animal decreases steadily.
- After delivery, the milk production gradually increases.
- As a result, the fat reserves of the animal’s body start breaking down and are used for energy supply to compensate for the energy loss generated in the animal’s body during this period.
